Clarifying J Street's Position

Published December 02, 2013, issue of November 28, 2013.

I would like to correct mis-impressions left by a couple of letters in the November 21 issue of the Jewish Journal.

J Street does not believe that Israel is the sole party responsible for the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, nor does it support BDS. We reject the underlying premise of this movement, which fails to explicitly recognize Israel’s right to exist and ignores or rejects Israel’s role as a national home for the Jewish people. In addition, the promotion by some in the BDS movement of the return to Israel of Palestinian refugees from 1948 and their families indicates support for an outcome incompatible with our vision of Israel, and incompatible with a two-state solution to the conflict.

We strongly advocate a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian crisis. An independent Israeli state living side by side with a contiguous, viable Palestinian state, based on 1967 borders with appropriate land swaps and a shared Jerusalem as capital of both nations, would strengthen Israel and help ensure its survival as a democratic Jewish state.
