When Cohen Hillel Academy (CHA) purchased new model iMacs, MacBooks and iPads this school year, approximately twenty Microsoft Surface tablets went largely unused, leading students and faculty to think about where they might be put to better use.

With the help of CHA’s technology consultant Michael Mino, who volunteers his time teaching STEM and English at Rancho Del Rey, a boys’ home for at-risk inner city youth near Monterrey, Mexico, CHA donated the tablets to Rancho Del Rey and they are now a productive, and very much appreciated, part of the of the boys’ daily education.

According to Head of School Amy Gold, the CHA community emphasizes and integrates communal and global responsibility into the overall learning experience across all grades, and the donation of the tablets offered Cohen Hillel an opportunity for tikkun olam (repairing the world).

“We are living our mission,” she said.
