Cohen Hillel Academy’s annual meeting, with the theme of L’CHAdesh (To Renew) on June 8 was a special evening of recognition and tribute. The K-8 pluralistic independent day school has been celebrating its sixtieth (diamond) anniversary year, and while looking back with pride, is well poised for growth and expansion in the coming years.
Robert Salter was honored with the Ernie Haas Presidential Award and Jerry Somers with the Leadership Award by board president Ariel Berger. Both Salter and Somers are Swampscott residents.
Amy Gold, Cohen Hillel’s Head of School, remarked with enthusiasm that the school’s success this year “…has much to do with each person feeling valued, committed, and part of a communal enterprise that is sacred. We all have a stake, and feel personally responsible for its success: Faculty and staff, parents, board members and trustees, students, alumni and community friends all have a growing sense of pride and spirit for Cohen Hillel and together we will continue to go from strength to strength.”
Jessica Black installed the 2016-2017 Board of Directors and welcomed new Board members Bernie Horowitz of Peabody, Rosalie Miller of Swampscott, David Pliner of Marblehead, Anne Selby of Swampscott, Zachary Shwartz, (CHA Class of 2008) of Malden and Tamar Skowronski of Swampscott. Cohen Hillel’s 2016-2017 officers include Robert Salter, Chairman; Ariel Berger, President; Jessica Black and Mark Farber, Vice Presidents; Miriam Blue, Secretary, and Rosalie Miller, Treasurer.
Heartfelt recognition was given to Lynne Havusha, Director of Student Services, who is retiring this year after 29 years at CHA, by Rayna and Cantor David Aronson of Temple Sinai, on behalf of all parents that she has assisted over the years. The school also celebrated 25 years of service by kindergarten teacher Barbara Sidman, 10 years by Mary Clough, Special Educator, and five years by CHA Alumna Beth Tassinari, who teaches kindergarten and Grade 1 Hebrew and Jewish Studies.
